Mechanical Engineer, Product Integration

Heron PowerScotts Valley, CA

About The Position

Heron Power is a startup company building cutting-edge power electronics for the 21st-century grid. We aim to debottleneck the growth of electricity generation and consumption with scalable, innovative, and less costly hardware solutions, accelerating the electrification of everything. Our first goal is to build better converters (inverters & rectifiers) to connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads to the grid. Heron’s leadership team is made up of seasoned veterans who have designed and shipped gigawatts of power conversion products over the past decade. We understand that no one individual knows everything. We will all learn a lot together and from each other. We strive to build a collaborative, enriching environment conducive to personal, technical, and career growth. You can expect to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, driven by first principles engineering, solving difficult problems. Job Overview As a Mechanical Engineer, Product Integration, you will be responsible for integrating mechanical, electrical, and thermal subsystems into complete, production-ready power converter products, with a strong focus on packaging. You will work at the system level, ensuring that enclosures, structures, cooling, insulation, cabling, and assemblies come together into robust, manufacturable, and serviceable products. You will collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, test, reliability, and manufacturing teams to drive integration decisions from early architecture through high-volume production. You will work closely with the manufacturing team to develop product manufacturing concepts, evaluating tradeoffs across cost, schedule, design complexity, and scalability. You will own mechanical integration across subsystems, identify and resolve interface risks, and ensure designs meet performance, reliability, safety, and manufacturability requirements.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of full-time industry experience integrating complex electromechanical products
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or similar
  • Strong experience working with 3D CAD (bonus for CATIA V6/3DX)
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, including a working understanding of electrical and thermal systems
  • Experience defining and managing interfaces between mechanical and electrical subsystems
  • Experience supporting prototype builds and resolving integration issues hands-on
  • Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing considerations and assembly processes
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Experience with reliability and validation testing, as well as DFMEAs
  • Experience with creepage/clearance, grounding, insulation systems, and safety requirements
  • Experience with thermal systems, including air or liquid cooling integration
  • Experience with PCBAs, connectors, fuses, and other electronic components
  • Experience with FEA, CFD, multi-physics modeling, or associated software (Ansys, MATLAB, Python, Simulink, StarCCM, etc.)
  • Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) and controlled release processes
  • Experience with medium voltage (34.5kV) or grid-related products, such as converters, switchgear, circuit breakers, insulation, and shielding

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical system integration and packaging for medium voltage power converters, ensuring compatibility across electrical, thermal, structural, and manufacturing requirements
  • Define and manage mechanical and packaging interfaces between subsystems, including enclosures, power electronics assemblies, busbars, cable routing, cooling systems, insulation, fasteners, and assembly hardware
  • Develop and evaluate product manufacturing trade studies, balancing performance, cost, lead time, reliability, serviceability, and scalability using first principles and engineering judgment
  • Make informed design decisions that consider manufacturing processes, assembly sequence, tolerance stack-ups, supply chain constraints, and cost targets
  • Identify and resolve integration and packaging risks related to tolerances, grounding, creepage/clearance, sealing, thermal expansion, shock/vibration, and assembly accessibility
  • Create and maintain 3D system layouts, packaging studies, interface definitions, and 2D drawings
  • Support prototype builds, system bring-up, and validation testing through hands-on involvement
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, manufacturing, test, reliability, and supply chain teams, as well as external partners and suppliers
  • Support transition from prototype to high-volume production, including DFM/DFA reviews and factory readiness

Benefits

  • Heron Power provides competitive compensation (salary and equity) and benefits.
  • The salary for this role ranges from $120,000 to $220,000 per year.
