Mechanical Engineer (Motors and Actuators) - Hands

1X Technologies ASPalo Alto, CA
5h$107,700 - $179,600

About The Position

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids. As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are looking for a Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in electric actuator design to support the development of NEO’s hands. In this role, you will own key mechanical subsystems of high-performance electric drive units, and be responsible for the design, optimization, selection, and integration of components such as rotors and stators, bearings, transmissions, and sensors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with CAD (Onshape preferred)
  • Experience with structural FEA
  • Hands-on experience designing electric actuators and/or motor-transmission assemblies
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques to ensure manufacturability for mid- and high-volume manufacturing
  • Experience bringing complex products from concept to production
  • Strong prototyping skills and intuition for efficient concept validation

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years experience in industry or structured research and development lab with hands on experience
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience with gearbox sizing and software tools like KISSsoft
  • Experience with electromagnetic motor design and software tools like MotorCAD
  • Experience with casting/forging DFM
  • Experience in designing robots, understanding of kinematics and dynamics of robotics systems
  • Experience with FMEA
  • Experience developing highly complex mechatronics systems with several Degrees of Freedom

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and validate robotics (electro)mechanical designs for electric actuators
  • Integrate electronics, sensors and cabling into robotic joints with large range of motion and tight packaging constraints
  • Optimize parts and assemblies for weight, cost, and performance
  • Create high-quality drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5) for manufacturing and production
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Author concise documentation of design details, requirements, and test plans

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
