Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a Summer Mechanical Engineer Intern for our Bridgeton, MO facility to support the design, fabrication support and modification of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical components, sub-systems and systems. Projects vary and may include skills with 3D modeling software, Mechanical Analysis, Thermal, Fluid Systems, Mechanical Packaging of electronics, or others. The intern may assist in the evaluation of the design approach to meet production requirements for new or improved products or services. The intern may also investigate solutions to product or process problems. Key skills are the ability to work and investigate assigned tasks in a team setting and also to collaborate amongst all the technical disciplines to complete the assigned tasks. The ideal candidate will demonstrate good judgment combined with technical expertise and will possess an ability to communicate effectively to team members from different disciplines. The purpose of the internship is to provide meaningful professional hands-on experience to students with proven academic performance and leadership potential. Students will also get to utilize our companies flexible work schedule.

  • Support and participate in technical mechanical engineering activities
  • Responsible for completion of assigned tasks on time and meeting technical requirements
  • Work closely with an engineering team to conceptualize systems and mechanical designs
  • Perform both system-level and component-level design and integration tasks involving mechanical and electro-mechanical component-level tasks which include determining block diagram, detailed design and 3D modeling, simulation, debug & test
  • Perform the design, development, modification, analysis, and documentation of various mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in existing products or systems and design corrective modifications as needed.
  • Develop custom fixtures for test, evaluation and manufacturing of mechanical equipment
  • Provide progress status for mechanical design assignments periodically
  • Participate in resolution of technical issues within the company and outside suppliers
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customers as required
  • Conduct root-cause failure analyses of electro-mechanical components
  • Use computer aided design tools to create and update integrated 3D CAD/CAM/CAE mechanical modeling and drawing solutions
  • Ability to work independently under supervision of others
  • May participate in preparation of less complex proposals
  • Attend and participate in appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • High school diploma or GED, and working on Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field
  • Experience with using 3D modeling software such as CREO, Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks, Unigraphics, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand commercial and/or military mechanical drawings
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and have the ability to build a good network
  • Must be diligent, hardworking, and quick to learn
  • Experience using Microsoft Office tools
  • Preferred to have a minimum of 1 other related internship, Co-op experience, or industry experience
