About The Position

This is a technical intern position where you, the engineer, will be expected to apply rigorous scientific method and mechanistic understanding to improve glass melting process and/or design capability for new and existing products, including flat consumer display glass, tubular pharmaceutical packaging glass, and other emerging glass products. The work requires you to be able to influence across organizational boundaries. You will collaborate with R D to identify controlling mechanisms and apply the understanding to manufacturing system to optimize a process, modify data streams or suggest melt system modifications.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years working toward a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering.
  • No prior experience required. Previous industrial experience is a plus.
  • Strong lab and experimental practices; can understand glass defect fundamentals and recognize deviations and implement routine solutions.
  • Ability to collaborate and integrate solutions.
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills.
  • Results oriented and high level of dedication. Able to work in any stage of innovation and handle risk of failure.
  • Aim to learn new technologies and processes quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Hot material process, such as melting and forming.
  • Knowledge of glass process modeling capability and how to use modeling tools spanning from early stage innovation to late stage manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of Corning processes and business systems as well as being passionate about learning new technologies.
  • Experience with software, such as JMP, MatLab, MindJet, etc.
  • Initiative and leadership skills.
  • Ability to grow a network to get things done.
  • Dedication, creativity and the passion to build and improve daily.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Generate hypothesis, experimental and/or equipment design, and analysis of data to isolate glass melt defect mechanisms and test solutions.
  • Conduct hands on work in a laboratory, pilot or manufacturing environment.
  • Communicate project status and updates to both the project team and to management, including memos, technical reports and verbal presentations.
  • Maintain contacts with outside groups, such as consultants, universities, and other professional organizations, to facilitate problem identification and solutions.
