The Mechanical Engineer working on fuel cell mechanical components is a vital team member to support activities related to Plug Power's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the specification, analysis, selection, testing, and integration of mechanical and electromechanical components used in fuel cell systems. These components include pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, humidifiers, valves, filters, and others. This position will work on new and existing products, and interface directly with the systems engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, reliability, controls, electrical, and product teams. The successful candidate must be a skilled collaborator who can engage cross-functionally with various team members to align efforts and synergize work activities. This position is critical to the continued optimization and performance of Plug Power's Fuel Cell Systems.

  • Lead definition and development of requirements, including performance, reliability, durability, inspection, and test plans for balance of plant components to meet overall fuel cell system design specifications and requirements.
  • Create and maintain accurate, complete, and concise engineering documentation to define a given component design, validation, review, and approval.
  • Conduct detailed engineering analysis and calculations to define and optimize critical design and performance parameters while maintaining system level goals.
  • Write test plans, lead test execution, and document findings to verify engineering analysis and drive fact-based decisions.
  • Engage new and existing suppliers on new projects and technologies as our fuel cell products continue to evolve.
  • Drive optimization and cost reduction through appropriate component and supplier selections.
  • Lead root cause analysis and problem solving for new and existing components.
  • Manage engineering changes for balance of plant components.
  • Work within fixed project schedules and deliver on-time results such that program schedules can be maintained.
  • Strictly follow all established company policies, including EHS policies.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Minimum BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related engineering discipline is required.
  • 3-5 years' relevant experience required for Engineer II.
  • Master's degree considered 1-2 years additional experience, PHD considered 2-3 years additional experience.
  • Relevant experience in mechanical engineering is ideal, preferably in a business with a manufacturing environment for technology products.
  • Experience in any of the following industries is preferred and valued: Fuel Cells and/or Hydrogen, Automotive or On-Road vehicles, Engine balance of plant components, Electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with Heat and Mass transfer is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively.
  • Must be driven and self-motivated.
