As an Engineer at Spartan Fire Chassis, you will be responsible for developing world-class, robust engineering solutions to the Fire Apparatus industry. This includes the design, development, and integration of components and sub-systems used on Fire Truck cab chassis. Engineers are responsible for all stages of a product; from research and development, through design and manufacturing, to test & evaluation, and aftermarket care. May be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products. Engineers are considered subject matter experts and are relied upon by other employees and customers for technical guidance and support.

  • Assist with designing, developing, executing, and evaluating fitness-for-use testing, product specifications and process validation plans for a variety of minimum complexity mechanical products and/or components.
  • Assist with creating and reviewing mechanical material part specifications and bills of materials.
  • Create and manage indented BOM in adherence to company standards.
  • Use CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software to develop the structural design of various products, model new designs, and produce detailed engineering drawings.
  • Verify designs through use of calculations and other analytical techniques and tools.
  • Fulfill customer requirements (i.e., shop orders) considering design rules and all applicable interface points.
  • Understand manufacturing processes with emphasis on metal fabrication and assemblies.
  • Apply DFM methodologies to deliver robust engineering packages emphasizing productivity in the manufacturing process.
  • Define test requirements and interpret test results to validate designs.
  • Identify problems, root causes and be able to define & execute resolutions using six sigma, 8D, 5-Why or similar techniques.
  • Understand and use lean principles as they apply to manufacturing and business processes.
  • Execute engineering changes through established processes and documentation.
  • Lead and execute cost saving projects through VA/VE initiatives.
  • Commit to excellence and high standards.
  • Become 'Subject Matter Expert' of applicable regulatory standards – NFPA, DOT, FMVSS, ULC etc.
  • Ability to mentor team members on design principles, regulatory standards etc.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent education required.
  • Typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.
  • Skills in computer simulation, cost estimation, design optimization, design review, engineering analysis & design, feasibility study, mathematical analysis & modeling, prototyping, quality assurance process and reliability analysis.
  • Knowledge of industry and vocational standards (NFPA, DOT, FMVSS, ULC etc).
  • CAD and CAE software experience. SolidWorks Preferred.
  • Experience with problem solving techniques (5 why & root cause analysis).
  • Experience with statistical techniques and data analysis.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work directly with hourly production employees and leadership concerning manufacturing initiatives and progress updates.
  • Strong work ethic, highly motivated, organized, and self-disciplined.
