About The Position

The Mechanical-Electrical-Plumbing (MEP) Engineer serves as the project manager on engineering projects or as engineering support on architectural and maintenance projects. Responsibilities include feasibility studies, deferred maintenance planning, estimating, construction administration and coordinating outside design consultants. The role involves managing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and building automation systems to ensure all work aligns with the standards, needs, and master plan criteria of the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Kansas Board of Regents.

Requirements

  • Licensed Engineer in Kansas or eligible for licensure.
  • Four (4) years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Plumbing Engineering, or Architectural Engineering. Education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with 2018 IBC Codes.
  • Experience with Office of Facilities Project Management Manual, Policies and Procedures.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Seven (7) Years of progressively responsible engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance Administration & Coordination Provide on-site field engineering support/recommendations to maintenance staff for equipment replacements and utility shutdowns.
  • Lead facilities initiative to develop and maintain a comprehensive asset and infrastructure map for all the major engineering systems on campus, including all significant components of the campus’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm, fire suppression, and storm/sanitary piping.
  • Review compliance code footprints, fire alarm/fire suppression shop drawings, and specifications for capital projects, assuring that all specifications, applicable codes, policies, and KUMC design guidelines are met.
  • Project Management Administration Provide project management and construction administration oversight for assigned maintenance and capital construction projects by:
  • Manage on-call design professionals' design drawings Verifying and reporting project cost controls/budgets and authorizing payment applications.
  • Monitor project changes and recommend remedial measures as necessary.
  • Provide oversight of project inspections and testing, and accept, after review, submittal review, project warranties, guarantees, as-built documentation, and oversight of close-out procedures and acceptance of completed projects.
  • Perform regular on-site field verifications of construction projects.
  • Mentor and support maintenance staff through field recommendations and support.
  • System Administration & Planning Support Support long-term facilities planning by contributing engineering input to campus master planning, utility infrastructure assessments, and capital improvement strategies.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, including record drawings, equipment databases, and performance reports, to support lifecycle management and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate system performance and recommend upgrades, replacements, or process improvements that align with sustainability and energy-efficiency goals.
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish design standards, technical guidelines, and best practices that enhance system reliability and optimize lifecycle costs.
  • Provide engineering insight during emergency response and recovery planning to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure continuity of operations.
