About The Position

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for the design, development, and build of custom machinery and production equipment used in advanced manufacturing environments. This role supports the full lifecycle of machine development—from concept and architecture through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing and building industrial equipment, with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, and integration into automated production systems.

Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related field
  • 3–10+ years of experience in machine design, automation equipment, or industrial systems
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, NX)
  • Proficiency in PLM,PDM workflows and BOM control
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Mechanical design fundamentals
  • Tolerancing, fits, and GD&T
  • Materials and fabrication processes (machining, welding, sheet metal)
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. Citizenship is required, as only U.S. Citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing custom production equipment or factory automation systems
  • Familiarity with:
  • Robotics integration
  • Industrial safety standards and machine guarding
  • High-temperature, vacuum, or process-driven environments
  • Experience working in fast-paced build or development environments
  • Exposure to scalable manufacturing systems or modular equipment design

Responsibilities

  • Design custom mechanical systems and production equipment, including:
  • Automated production cells and workstations
  • Material handling and fixturing systems
  • Thermal or process equipment
  • Post-processing and finishing systems
  • Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed fabrication drawings
  • Define system-level architectures and layouts for manufacturing equipment
  • Perform:
  • Tolerance stack-ups and GD&T
  • Structural and mechanical analysis (fit, function, durability)
  • Select and integrate mechanical components, such as:
  • Motors, gearboxes, bearings
  • Linear motion systems (rails, ball screws, actuators)
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic components
  • Apply design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with:
  • Controls and automation engineers (PLC, sensors, robotics)
  • Process engineers (manufacturing workflows and constraints)
  • Fabrication and assembly teams
  • Support machine build, debug, and commissioning, including:
  • Hands-on troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Iterative design improvements based on real-world performance
  • Develop and maintain:
  • Bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Technical documentation and assembly instructions
  • Vendor specifications and sourcing inputs
  • Drive continuous improvement of existing equipment:
  • Increase uptime and reliability
  • Reduce cost and complexity
  • Improve maintainability and serviceability
