About The Position

Mechanical Design Engineer I/II - Electronic Module Design and Packaging The Mechanical Design Engineer will be a key contributor to the design, development, and validation of Electronic Control Unit (ECU) enclosures and related mechanical systems for our innovative vehicle technology (RVT). This role is ideal for an enthusiastic, early-career engineer looking to build expertise in thermal management, design for manufacturing (DFM), and packaging of automotive electronics in a fast-paced environment. The candidate will work closely with senior engineers to execute design tasks, analyze component performance, and support the product lifecycle from concept through mass production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 0-4 years of relevant professional or intern/co-op experience in mechanical design.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred). Ability to create detailed drawings following GD&T principles.
  • Foundational understanding of heat transfer and materials science (metals, plastics). Familiarity with basic DFM/DFA concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate technical issues clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the 3D CAD modeling and drafting of ECU enclosures, mounting brackets, connectors, and heat sink assemblies using industry-standard tools (e.g., 3dxperience).
  • Execute detailed design tasks under the guidance of senior engineers, focusing on robust design practices for automotive environments (vibration, shock, temperature cycling).
  • Support the integration and packaging of electronic components within the vehicle, ensuring compliance with thermal, sealing (IP rating), and EMI/EMC requirements.
  • Conduct basic thermal analysis (hand calculations and initial CFD setup) to validate design performance and assist in interpreting simulation results.
  • Perform closed-loop tolerance analysis based on part drawings and datum schemes.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing partners and suppliers to ensure designs are optimized for mass production, focusing on DFM/DFA principles.
  • Support the creation of prototypes and test fixtures; assist in setting up and executing validation tests (e.g., thermal chamber, vibration testing).
  • Document design specifications, change requests, and validation reports accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in design reviews, providing input on assigned subsystems and proactively identifying potential design risks.

Benefits

  • Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26.
  • Full Time Employee coverage is effective on the first day of employment.
