About The Position

The CNS (Communication, Navigation & Surveillance) Mechanical Engineering Group in Melbourne, Florida is seeking a mechanical design engineer who will be responsible for the electronics packaging design of commercial avionics. The primary responsibility for this position will be to provide design engineering support for products in production, in the field, and in development. These products include avionics equipment composed of circuit card assemblies, metallic housings and chassis, heatsinks, and electromagnetic interference shielding. Duties will include investigation and resolution of production build and field issues, configuration research, as well as design-related tasks. This position, supporting primarily existing product designs, focuses on building electronic packaging knowledge and skills in preparation for an eventual shift into a product design role. With successful development, the candidate will be responsible for the design and development of more complex modules and complete products. This role is based in Melbourne, Florida.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and less than 2 years prior relevant experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Person - Job requires access to ITAR or 600/500-series EAR information or hardware (directly or indirectly) and the company will not seek an export authorization for this role.
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling is required.

Nice To Haves

  • A Mechanical Engineering degree is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GDT)
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods and material usage for sheet metal and machined parts
  • Demonstrated electronic packaging design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop solutions to production and field problems.
  • Utilize CAD system (Siemens NX) to research product designs, troubleshoot issues, and design solutions.
  • Participate in module level redesign.
  • Support printed circuit card layouts.
  • Support analytical activities such as Thermal, Structural, and Tolerance Analyses.
  • Create design mockups including 3D printing of prototype parts.
  • Assist in environmental testing (vibration, temperature, humidity).
  • Develop design and modification documentation.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to work well with a variety of disciplines within Collins Aerospace.
  • Requires good organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments.
