Job Description: Caterpillar’s E&ES Division is looking for a Design Engineer to assist in design and development of battery power sources to meet our commitment to a reduced-carbon future and to help our customers achieve their climate-related goals. In this role, you will design, analyze, and implement complex mechanical systems used to package battery packs and racks into customer applications. This individual will work on designs that range from concept to production within multiple New Product Introduction (NPI) programs. This role will allow you to utilize your understanding structural, thermal, or electrical design to drive the development of innovative battery packaging designs while collaborating closely with electrical engineers and customer design teams to meet the requirements of internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Experience on the design and development of battery pack/rack or similar electrical integration systems
  • Proficiency with Creo (or equivalent) and familiarity with Teamcenter (or equivalent model database system)
  • Effectively performs the technical job aspects, continuously building knowledge and keeping up-to-date on technical and procedural job components.
  • Applies technical operating and project standards based on achieving excellence in delivered products, technologies and services.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well in other units, customers, and suppliers
  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications
  • Organizes and prioritizes the sequence of steps to be taken to remedy the situation.
  • Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research.

Responsibilities

  • Create design of battery systems for current and new battery system applications within the context of NTI (New Technology Introduction), NPI (New Product Introduction), or CPI (Current Product Improvement)
  • Utilize a robust problem solving and implementation process to resolve and improve designs
  • Evaluate and optimize designs of battery mount structures, cooling systems, and high voltage electrical connections using structural and thermal simulation tools
  • Collaborate with suppliers on design and manufacturability to meet time and cost targets
  • Contribute to the development of battery system FMEAs and validation plans
  • Support colleagues in the design, build, or validation processes to ensure product requirements and development schedules are met
  • Protect Caterpillar’s intellectual property
