About The Position

Avantor is looking for a Mechanical Design Drafter to work with Engineers, various departments and customers to create drawings. The Design Drafter will conceptualize, create, and revise fabrication and assembly drawings from verbal and/or written descriptions and sketches. The designs will include a broad range of engineering disciplines including, but not limited to, electrical, mechanical, structural and chemical. This person will also generate and revise equipment documentation, including operational, installation, maintenance, and qualification manuals and prepare bill of materials, bids, and cost/design analysis of various projects as directed. This position reports to the Engineering Manager or designate and will be based out of our Bakersfield, CA office.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required. 2 year technical degree preferred or equivalent experience drafting in a manufacturing support environment.
  • 2+ years related experience using drafting software (i.e. AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Prior experience using shop fabrication techniques, including welding and machining, is a plus.
  • Experience following codes and regulations to properly construct machinery such as ASME, NFPA, CBC, and others.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals and to effectively communicate and present information and respond to questions.
  • Use mathematical concepts such as algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry.
  • Apply engineering concepts such as fluids dynamics, thermal dynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain P&ID's, site and equipment layouts as directed.
  • Create three-dimensional models, P&ID's facility and equipment layouts drawings using AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS software.
  • Create 3D and 2D layouts that are ready to be used to construct processes or fabricated machinery.
  • Perform related design modification, malfunction, failure investigation, and evaluations as well as technical report preparations and similar ancillary duties.
  • Work with minimal technical direction, independently develop approach to analyze and solve a wide range of difficult problems.
  • Assist in the construction inspection and installation process to validate conformance to established drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Follow codes and regulations to properly construct machinery such as ASME, NFPA, CBC, and others.
  • Follow SOP and HSP that are created by Safety, Regulatory, and Quality departments.
  • May interface with customers on specific projects as designated.
  • Research, design, develop, and test circuits, components, equipment, and/or devices as needed.
  • Ability to calculate flow or thermal mass balances to determine pip flow rate, mass flow rate, temperature, pressure, and other variables needed to determine the sizing of heat exchanger, pump, and process equipment.
  • Investigate injury and incident reports when related to engineering personnel or facility/equipment issues.
  • Perform cost evaluation on assigned projects.
  • Be able to use Microsoft Project to construct and design proper timelines and properly estimate completion of project.
  • Be able to properly manage project budget, properly receive all invoices, and vary payment of project contractors.
  • May direct or assist in leading Engineering Mechanics / Electricians / Machinist on aspects of various task based projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
