We are seeking a contract mechanical designer who combines strong CAD proficiency with practical fabrication insight and creative problem solving. The ideal candidate is experienced in SolidWorks, sheet metal design, and CNC-based manufacturing, and can take broad design goals and translate them into production-ready components and assemblies. This role is suited to someone who enjoys balancing hands-on manufacturability with conceptual freedom — someone comfortable making informed design choices that reduce cost, simplify assembly, and improve overall product quality. This role is a 6-month contract, located in Jacksonville, but mostly a remote support.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including sheet metal, weldments, and assembly management.
  • Working knowledge of CNC machining, laser cutting, press brake, and fabrication workflows.
  • Understanding of tolerancing, materials, and finishing processes.
  • Ability to think independently while maintaining alignment with project intent.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain design rationale visually and verbally.
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, product development, or fabrication engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or relevant field

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed SolidWorks models, assemblies, and fabrication drawings with appropriate tolerances and GD&T.
  • Design for sheet metal, CNC machining, and welded assemblies.
  • Work directly from concept sketches, photos, or design briefs, taking creative ownership to achieve functional goals.
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles to simplify production and reduc e fabrication time.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders or vendors to review manufacturability and implement design improvements.
  • Create BOMs, exploded views, and documentation packages suitable for shop release.
  • Participate in weekly design reviews and provide rationale for design decisions.
  • Support limited prototype or field integration activities as needed.
