About The Position

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a Utah State University student in engineering or a related field to assist full-time mechanical designers. This is a year-round position, not a summer internship or temporary role. Students design their schedule each semester to accommodate their classes and generally keep their position until they graduate, with the possibility of retention for up to one semester after graduation while applying for full-time positions. SDL offers a Student Scholar Program providing unique opportunities for student employees to develop real-world experience and knowledge beyond the classroom, including monthly technical workshops, outreach activities, and academic stipends. SDL delivers advanced multi-domain solutions for national security and scientific discovery, specializing in satellites, sensors, ground systems, data processing, and autonomous systems for missions supporting NASA and the Department of Defense. Requirements

  • Must be a Utah State University student with a minimum of one year completed working toward an ungraduated or graduate degree in engineering or a related field
  • Must have at least one year remaining in school
  • Must be able to work on-site in North Logan, Utah
  • Must be available to 15- 20 hours per week during semesters with the possibility of more hours being available during summer
  • Extreme attention to detail with high level of craftsmanship
  • Effective organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with CAD software, 3D printing, and MS Office
  • Ability to work flexible hours working occasional nights and weekends
  • Demonstrated ability to stay on task without supervision
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and a risk-conscious mindset
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or other U.S. person

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of school remaining
  • Experience with Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or NX
  • Experience with Cura, OrcaSlicer, or other slicing software

Responsibilities

  • Engineering-prototype part generation operating SDL’s 3D printer
  • Prepping parts for use in prototype form (may require sanding and fitting)
  • Performing basic 3D printer maintenance
  • Maintaining the consumables inventory
  • Receiving work orders and scheduling parts for printing
  • Documenting billing records
  • Interfacing with vendors for non-user serviceable maintenance and upgrades
  • Maintaining CAD common parts and materials databases
  • Keeping common parts library accurate in-sync with SDL’s inventory database
  • Creating new common parts as needed using parametric design
  • Keeping materials library up-to-date and relevant for both CAD and CAE software
  • Entry-level drafting
  • Producing basic mechanical drawings accurately communicating design intent for fabrication and archival purposes under the supervision of a Mechanical Designer or Engineer
  • Updating and maintaining CAD templates
