The Mechanical Constructor is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and performing preventative maintenance on all mechanical and hydraulic equipment related to power production at hydroelectric projects and other generation facilities. This role requires both independent work and collaboration within a team, with a focus on ensuring operational efficiency and safety standards are met.

  • Installs, modifies, services, and repairs mechanical equipment and machinery such as turbines, generators, governors, pumps, compressors, valves, cranes, and hoists.
  • Utilizes portable equipment and tools, such as drills, welders, grinders, and special tools, gauges, and instruments.
  • Performs maintenance activities including oil purification, operates overhead cranes, hoists, winches, rigging, painting, welding, grinding, pipe fitting, gauge testing, lathe work, carpentry, and concrete work.
  • Assists Electrical Constructors, Technicians, and Engineers in testing and research for new equipment installation or repairs.
  • Records information and maintains accurate daily plant operating logs including water flow and storage calculations.
  • Observes operational changes such as voltage levels and generation output to maintain schedules and water flows.
  • Performs non-high voltage lockout/tag-out procedures.
  • Works from equipment instruction books, mechanical drawings, or sketches for maintenance, modification, or installation.
  • Inspects and maintains plant structures, dam, spillways, fishways, and service installations.
  • Starts and stops hydroelectric units as directed, ensuring compliance with FERC license and NERC/WECC standards.
  • Provides work direction to District personnel or contracted crews for installation and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
  • Supervises and trains Generation Maintenance Helper, Generation Utility Workers, and Summer Hires.
  • Four years' experience as a Journeyman Hydroelectric Plant Mechanic or equivalent experience.
  • Valid Washington State Driver License with a good driving record.
  • Valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver License required within six months from start of job.
  • First Aid, CPR, and forklift certification required within six months from start of job.
  • Unrestricted respirator clearance within six months from start of job.
