About The Position

Michael Baker International is seeking to hire a Mechanical Associate (Building Design) for our Salt Lake City, UT office. As part of our NW/SW Mechanical Team, the Mechanical Associate will support the planning, design, and construction administration of mechanical and plumbing systems for a wide variety of federal and infrastructure projects. This role is intended for an early career professional seeking to build a strong technical foundation through hands-on design experience, mentorship, and progressive responsibility within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment. In this role, you will develop foundational skills in interpreting Request for Proposal (RFP) documents, performing mechanical and plumbing system calculations, preparing construction documents, and editing technical specifications. You will work closely with project managers, senior engineers, and designers to support successful project delivery while building professional relationships with internal teams, clients, contractors, and vendors.

Requirements

  • You’ll need a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • You’ll need to be a motivated self-starter who displays a passion for solving problems, interacting in a team environment, and meeting established deadlines.
  • You’ll need to be organized, assertive, and willing to learn. You’ll also need to be able to network and build relationships with a wide variety of people.
  • You’ll need computer skills using the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • You’ll need to be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • It would be a plus if you have passed your Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and have your Engineer In Training (EIT) credential.
  • It would be a plus if you have experience using Revit, AutoCAD, Trane Trace 700 or 3D, or equivalent load software experience.
  • It would be a plus if you have experience designing both mechanical and plumbing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support mechanical and plumbing design efforts on one or more projects concurrently under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Perform engineering calculations for HVAC systems, mechanical piping, plumbing, compressed air, and building utility systems.
  • Assist with system selection, equipment sizing, and layout development for new and existing facilities.
  • Participate in energy analysis and load modeling using tools such as Trane TRACE 700 or similar software.
  • Apply applicable codes and standards (ASHRAE, IBC, IMC, IPC, UFC, and federal agency criteria) to assigned design tasks.
  • Prepare technical studies, design narratives, engineering calculations, and reports in support of project delivery.
  • Assist with the development, editing, and coordination of construction specifications.
  • Support the preparation of construction drawings using Autodesk Revit for new and existing facilities across multiple phases of design.
  • Accurately incorporate redlines, comments, and quality review feedback into project deliverables.
  • Clearly communicate technical information and design intent to project leads, designers, and drafters.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to support integrated, constructable designs.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and, as appropriate, client or contractor coordination meetings.
  • Build and maintain professional working relationships with team members, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.
  • Execute assigned tasks in accordance with project budgets and schedules as directed by the project lead.
  • Assist with defining task-level man-hour estimates and work planning efforts.
  • Participate in internal quality control and technical review processes.
  • Actively engage in training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities, including working toward Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and professional licensure.
  • Travel occasionally, as required, to support site visits, field investigations, or project coordination efforts.
