About The Position

Under general supervision, review plans and specifications for the construction, alteration, repair, removal, or replacement of gas, mechanical, and plumbing systems.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, or higher, and four (4) years of journey-level HVAC installation or modification experience or mechanical inspection experience.
  • Certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Mechanical or Plumbing Inspector is required by the time of appointment
  • ICC certification as Mechanical or Plumbing Plans Examiner is required within six (6) months of the date of employment
  • Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by the time of appointment.
  • Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety sensitive are subject to drug and alcohol testing following federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Review plan specifications for permits regarding gas, mechanical, and plumbing systems.
  • Receive, review, and forward plans and specifications to determine code compliance resulting in the issuance of a permit to construct, alter, repair, move, demolish, or replace gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems.
  • Verify that plan specifications are drawn to scale with sufficient clarity and detail to indicate the nature and character of work to facilitate the determination of compliance with technical code.
  • Include in the review plumbing fixture count, number of bathrooms, heat systems including duct size and heat controls, and gas appliances properly designed and vented.
  • Ensure piping arrangement and sizing, and verify that mathematical calculations meet code specifications.
  • Note noncompliance on plans and correction sheets and suggest modifications to plans.
  • Submit detailed reports of noncompliance to the builder for corrections, approve and sign plans meeting code.
  • Issue occupancy certificates to builder or owner when completed.
  • Assist in review, revision, and update of current codes.
  • Propose and implement studies to improve and update mechanical, gas, and plumbing codes.
  • Interpret codes and regulations for architects, engineers, contractors, plumbers, mechanics, HVAC, and the public.
  • Answer telephone inquiries related to permitting process and code compliance.
  • Assist at the counter with permit requests and review of plans.
  • Approve permits.
  • Perform field inspections to assist inspectors with difficult or unusual code requirements.
  • File reports in computer databases.
  • Recommend procedures to improve services.
