The Mechanical and Plumbing Inspector is responsible for performing inspections to ensure compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and heating codes. This role involves inspecting both residential and commercial construction projects, including renovations and mobile home setups, to certify that all work meets applicable regulations. The inspector works under the supervision of a Chief Building Inspector and must interact with contractors, property owners, and the public to address compliance issues and provide guidance on regulations.

  • Perform inspections of heating and plumbing installations and fixtures on new or remodeled construction sites.
  • Examine workmanship and materials for compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Notify responsible parties of defects found and conduct follow-up inspections to ensure corrective measures are taken.
  • Discuss conditions found with owners or builders and explain the importance of compliance.
  • Advise plumbers, contractors, and others regarding county plumbing and heating regulations and codes.
  • Review plans and specifications for compliance with plumbing, heating, and cooling requirements.
  • Maintain records of inspections and prepare related reports.
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency.
  • Three years of experience in at least one of the specified building trades (building/electrical/plumbing, gas/heating).
  • Possession of at least a Level I State Inspection Certification in the specified building trades area.
  • A valid North Carolina Driver License.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods and procedures involved in the installation and maintenance of plumbing, heating, and cooling systems or electrical wiring.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Possession of a Level II State Inspection Certification in the same area of specialization within three years after appointment as a Building Inspector.
