About The Position

Alaska Marine Trucking provides and manages local freight distribution services in Alaska which includes loading, unloading, warehousing, pickup and delivery. Alaska Marine Trucking works closely with Alaska Marine Lines in coastal communities throughout Southeast, Central, and Western Alaska. We currently have an opening for a Mechanic in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a full-time position which offers family friendly benefits, a competitive pay package and professional growth. SUMMARY: Our mechanics repair and maintain industrial trucks and trailers, machinery, and mechanical equipment to include engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and various equipment by performing the following duties.

Requirements

  • Must possess mechanical inclination and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position; employee customarily works at least 40 hours/week on a planned continuous basis.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with co-workers, supervisors, and managers, to understand procedures and warning signs and or markings in the English language, to respond to inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions; ability to prioritize and problem-solve in time/safety-sensitive situations; ability to read and understand wire and hydraulic schematics.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, and the ability to prioritize and problem-solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to organize and follow through to completion projects and tasks assigned or assumed; ability to provide objective and decisive action(s) necessary to resolve any/all issues with minimal disruption to operational performance.
  • Basic computer program skills: Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Visio and Outlook.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hazardous materials training.
  • Detail oriented, good interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
  • Must be flexible to work extended hours and adaptable to change.
  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports in the provided maintenance software.
  • Ability to analyze repair mechanical failures.
  • Must be capable of working with little or no supervision as well as working as part of a team.
  • Must provide own toolbox and sufficient hand tools to perform most assigned duties.
  • Ability to obtain Alaska Commercial Driving License with air brake endorsement.
  • Ability to obtain Valid DOT medical card.
  • Ability to obtain Forklift Operation Certification.
  • Ability to obtain FHWA Inspector Qualification Certification (per 49 CFR § 396.19) and Brake Inspector Qualification Certification (per 49 CFR § 396.25)
  • A post-conditional offer of successfully passing an employment drug test and background investigation are required.

Responsibilities

  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Reads job order and determines work procedures.
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts. Install new parts and reassembles device.
  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections. Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks, and makes adjustments.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts. Installs special functional and structural parts in devices. Lubricates and cleans parts.
  • Starts and drives repaired equipment to verify conformance to specifications and to test their performance and may assist with equipment relocation.
  • Sets up and operates drill press, grinder, and other metalworking tools to make and repair parts.
  • Repairs electrical equipment.
  • Performs basic computer functions by completing job work orders using Transman Fleet Equipment Maintenance System, recording materials used, type of work accomplished, and maintenance system codes.
  • Complies with all company safety policies, including use of protective equipment and Fit for Work.
