About The Position

The position involves diagnosing malfunctions and making repairs and adjustments to all equipment to keep it in good operating condition. The employee will perform maintenance and repairs to all systems on automobiles, trucks, and equipment owned by the City, as well as preventative maintenance to ensure proper care and servicing. The role also includes performing arc and gas welding or cutting for maintenance, repair, and construction of City equipment, repairing and sharpening tools, devising fixtures to facilitate repair work, maintaining records, ordering necessary parts, and assisting in snow removal operations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and at least 1 year of specialized training in automobile and equipment mechanics.
  • At least 4 - 6 years of related experience and certification as a journeyman mechanic.
  • Knowledge of techniques and practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in automotive mechanics.
  • Knowledge of techniques and practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in arc and gas welding and blacksmithing.
  • Knowledge of properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and practices to avoid or minimize risks.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to diagnose operating malfunctions and make all necessary repairs.
  • Ability to operate light to heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform light to heavy physical tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Skill in journeyman level skills in welding, gas and diesel engine repair.
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the performance of the essential job functions.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.

Nice To Haves

  • CDL with A, B, and C endorsements, and N preferred.
  • A/C certification.
  • Fork lift certification.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license.

Responsibilities
