About The Position

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Transformer Maintenance position is to maintain adequate stock of transformers and maintain compliance on all issues with transformers and perform maintenance on DES Construction vehicles. RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with Purchasing Manager to maintain adequate stock of transformers. Do all work pertaining to polychlorinated biphenyls’ (PCB) oil sampling, retro-filling, and disposal and maintain detailed and current records and have them readily available for state or Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) audits. Oversee and/or perform all repairs for regulators, reclosers, and padmount transformers. Unload all new transformers and transport repaired transformers to and from repair shop. Tag all transformers with DES company number and maintain records of all transformer information. Review transformer billing and confirm accuracy of billing. Perform routine maintenance (PMs) such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment. Diagnose, adjust, and repair various types of truck equipment including, but not limited to the following: Electrical/Brake/Cooling Systems, Starters/Alternators, Air conditioning systems, Fan clutches, Engine electronics, Power steering systems, Engines (gas and diesel), Transmissions (manual and automatic), Clutches, Differentials, etc. knowledge in Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Systems. Maintain adequate stock of filters for construction trucks. Purchase and maintain adequate stock of tires for construction trucks and have them ready at scheduled maintenance times. Maintain truck service records and schedule maintenance at regular intervals. Service and maintain stand by generators. Maintain service bay and pit area in the truck shop neat and organized. Additional duties as assigned by Construction Superintendent. Follow all DES safety guidelines and policies, including emergency procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/ GED required.
  • A minimum 3 years’ experience as a mechanic on Class 4 through 6 vehicles.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties.
  • Mechanical skills and experience working with diesel engines.
  • Detail oriented, meticulous record keeping ability required.
  • Able to work without supervision
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers, other employees of DES and the general public.
  • Must have the highest degree of integrity, honesty, pleasant disposition, dependability and tact, and must treat all DES employees with dignity and respect. Must be able to maintain composure during difficult situations to discuss and resolve issues and maintain open communications to achieve DES goals and objectives.
  • Must believe in, be sympathetic with, be interested in furthering the public understanding and acceptance of the utility’s objective and be customer service oriented at all times.
  • Must be willing to work with all employees in the best interest of the utility and to accept changes in work programs and patterns to keep pace with changing times.
  • Must be in good physical condition and health with sufficient physical strength and ability to perform heavy manual tasks relating to substation construction, including working out of a bucket truck.
  • Must be in good physical condition and health with sufficient physical strength and ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to work at least 8 hours or more in emergency situations, bending, lifting, or climbing.
  • Must be able to work under any type of weather conditions.
  • Must be skilled in the application of first aid methods.
  • Must be able to follow safe and efficient work practices.
  • Must have good mental concentration to work with high voltage equipment.
  • Must possess at the time of employment a valid Class A Commercial Driver License and a safe driving record. Maintaining the Class A CDL or equivalent license is a continuing condition of employment.
  • Must maintain at the time of employment or obtain at a time designated by DES, a valid certification of proficiency in adult CPR, first aid, and AED.

  • Mechanic Certification is a preferred.
  • CDL A preferred
  • Electric utility experience a plus
