About The Position

Delta Utilities is seeking a Mechanic, Service Gas who is responsible for checking operations and installation/replacement and reading of gas meters. Please Note: This position requires you to live within 35 miles of New Orleans, LA or relocation within 30 days of hire date. We are not offering relocation at this time. This position will have up at least 50%-75% travel daily to our customer locations within our New Orleans work territory. There will be no "out of business area" travel. A company vehicle will be provided, which will require a valid, non-expired, Driver's License and no moving violations within the last 12 months.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages), punctuation, grammar and spelling.
  • Mechanic I : 1 plus years of gas distribution experience or equivalent plumbing work experience.
  • Mechanic II : 2 plus years of gas mechanic or equivalent plumbing/pipefitter experience
  • Mechanic Sr : 5 plus years gas distribution experience
  • Knowledge of LA811 locate ticket process.
  • Ability to recognize and embrace opportunities for process improvement.
  • Ability to install meter sets
  • Strong mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to work with a large diverse team
  • Knowledge of gas distribution system
  • Working knowledge of the GIS graphical program
  • Knowledgeable in MS Office software (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Good mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and small power tools.
  • Ability to communicate well with customers, city inspectors, police and fire department officials.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain D.O.T. Office of Pipeline Safety operator qualification as it pertains to gas service work.
  • Good interpersonal skills along with good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings to locate underground facilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Self-motivated and dependable team player.
  • Familiar with local plumbing code.
  • Ability to cut and tread pipe.
  • Ability to recognize hazards in the workplace and have ability to mitigate the hazards.
  • Must possess a valid, non-expired Driver's License.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class D Driver’s License when needed.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle, including the ability to enter and exit vehicle unassisted.
  • Able to perform on-site inspections.
  • Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.
  • Able to exert up to 50 Lbs. of force occasionally, and /or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to work daily in all types of weather conditions.
  • Able to work regular hours, with occasional overtime.
  • Able to handle emergency situations, including possible exposure to gaseous atmospheres on occasion.
  • Able to work rotating shifts, if required.
  • Able to respond to emergency calls and/or callouts and occasionally return to work while off duty.
  • Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs daily.
  • Able to be included in random drug screen pool required for DOT drivers and DOT safety sensitive positions.
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts.
  • Notice: As a safety sensitive position, compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol regulations is required, including but not limited to pre-employment drug testing and background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Turn the gas service on and off per gas procedures.
  • Install and replace gas meters.
  • Accurately read meters.
  • Check operation of and adjust pressure regulator equipment.
  • Investigating and repairing gas leaks on company and customer facilities.
  • Make minor adjustments to customer's appliances and relight appliances.
  • Troubleshooting many types of customer requests.
  • Cutting, threading and pipe fitting.
  • Utilize GIS technology and basic PC applications to maintain accurate records.
  • Investigation and write detailed reports on any explosion, accident, fire, or damage or any kind on which assigned.
