About The Position

The Master Mechanic position at Methodist Medical Center involves providing maintenance for the hospital's buildings, grounds, equipment, and distribution lines for steam, hot water, plumbing, and sanitation. The role requires taking after-hours calls and performing a variety of mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance tasks. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate (GED).
  • Ability to read with comprehension, write legibly, perform simple mathematic calculations, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Prior courses in blueprint reading, electricity, machine shop, mathematics, plastering, construction principles, masonry, and plumbing.
  • Familiarity with building maintenance techniques, equipment, and operation of power plants, plumbing and heating systems, sanitation, refrigeration, electrical systems, and fire and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning of equipment and possible fire and safety hazards.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and under emergency conditions.
  • Ability to maintain concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods, sometimes under stressful conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of progressive experience in maintenance work.
  • A 2-year degree or completion of a 12-24 month vocational certification in a related field accompanied by a minimum of one year maintenance/construction work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance repairs as prescribed by the preventive maintenance program.
  • Conduct mechanical repairs to machines and equipment, including masonry work, plumbing, heating, batteries, boilers, water treatment, plastering, and sheet metal.
  • Oversee and ensure safe and efficient operation of the physical plant and hospital utilities.
  • Observe mechanical/electrical devices in operation to locate causes of trouble; dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; repair or replace defective parts.
  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments or install special functional and structural parts.
  • Maintain, lubricate, and performance test equipment.
  • Set up and operate lathes, drill press, grinder, and other metal working tools to make and repair parts as needed.
  • Initiate purchase orders for parts and machines as required.
  • Perform duties of boiler attendant as needed.
  • Install, inspect, operate, and repair refrigeration equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water, and air conditioning for all hospital buildings; maintain air conditioner filters.
  • Assume 'on call' duties.
