About The Position

The Mechanic II position at Transportation involves performing major and minor mechanical repairs on district vehicles to ensure their proper performance and safety. The role requires adherence to established policies and procedures while working with minimal supervision. The mechanic will be responsible for maintaining accurate records of all work performed and ensuring that vehicles are serviced according to a preventive maintenance schedule.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Valid Class B - CDL Drivers' License with 'P' and 'S' endorsements within three (3) months of employment.
  • Must obtain a vehicle inspector license within 3 months of employment preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair.
  • Must demonstrate mechanical proficiency in work to be performed.
  • Must furnish own tools and be able to access and use printed service materials.
  • Must be cooperative and show initiative toward improving skills.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Able to pass US Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam.
  • Able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a mechanic working on commercial trucks and/or buses preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner as assigned by supervisor.
  • Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule and maintain accurate, updated records of all work performed.
  • Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed with minimum supervision.
  • Take necessary steps to improve skills as a mechanic by attending assigned classes and workshops.
  • Maintain a clean shop.
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition and perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment according to established schedules.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Salary Range Min. $19.42 Mid. $23.71 Max. $27.54 (Based on previous experience).
  • 2025-2026 Salary schedule with 3% of midpoint increase approved by the Board.
