About The Position

The City of Carmel Street Department is seeking a highly skilled Mechanic I to perform advanced mechanical, diagnostic, and welding work on a wide range of municipal vehicles and equipment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring that the City’s fleet remains reliable, safe, and ready to serve the community year-round — including during demanding snow and emergency operations.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Experience with welding, fabrication, and use of torches and related equipment.
  • Proficiency using diagnostic tools, automotive lifts, brake lathes, volt/ohm meters, battery testers, air tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong recordkeeping and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide technical guidance when needed.
  • Commitment to safety and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Proficiency using a range of equipment scanning tools, computers, and other electronic devices.
  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational or technical training in automotive diagnostics and repair.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including lead mechanic experience.
  • Must obtain a CDL within one year of employment and maintain license.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge and skills will be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Hybrid vehicle experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with fleet management software systems preferred

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose mechanical and electronic malfunctions.
  • Perform repairs on cars, vans, pickup trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, bucket trucks, spreaders, plows, and other heavy equipment.
  • Test and repair ignition systems, computerized engine controls, fuel injection systems, and emission systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance including fluid service, lubrication, part replacement, and tire service.
  • Conduct small engine repairs on generators, chain saws, mowers, blowers, and related equipment.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, paint, and bodywork as needed.
  • Install radios, computers, and electronic equipment in fleet vehicles.
  • Schedule and prioritize repair work to meet operational deadlines.
  • Coordinate outside vendor repairs and warranty work.
  • Maintain accurate preventive and corrective maintenance records.
  • Manage inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Assist with purchase orders, bids, and budget input.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
