About The Position

The Mechanic I position performs skilled maintenance and repair of District vehicles and mosquito control application equipment to ensure safe, reliable operations. This role supports fleet readiness through preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair activities while adhering to safety and regulatory standards. The position works collaboratively within the Fleet Maintenance team and supports cross-trained operational needs as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • At least two (2) years of training and/or experience in one or more of the following areas: automotive or equipment mechanics, welding, machining, small engine repair, auto body repair, or vehicle painting.
  • Ability to accurately maintain maintenance, inspection, and inventory records using computer-based systems and mobile devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work dependably, manage assigned tasks responsibly, and meet established performance and safety standards.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency response situations, as operational needs require.
  • Ability and willingness to work with insecticides and related materials in accordance with applicable safety regulations and training.
  • Authorization to work legally in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal technical training or coursework in automotive technology, diesel mechanics, equipment maintenance, or a related trade.
  • Possession of a current Public Health Pest Control License issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), or prior experience obtaining and maintaining such licensure.
  • The District may provide training and support for required licensure and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on District vehicles, light equipment, pesticide application equipment, boats, and off-road vehicles.
  • Inspect, service, and maintain vehicle and equipment safety systems, including brakes, lights, horns, wipers, and other required safety-related components.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Supply and maintain a personal set of mechanic’s tools necessary to perform assigned duties. The District is responsible for specialty tools.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Perform light to moderate mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment, including electrical, ignition, fuel, induction, and related systems.
  • Conduct routine servicing, troubleshooting, calibration, and component replacement on spray and metering equipment; assist with major repairs or overhauls as assigned.
  • Perform basic auto body repair and refinishing work, including minor body repair, fender straightening, rust repair, and painting of District vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with the installation of auxiliary or specialized equipment on District vehicles and perform light fabrication tasks as needed.
  • Assist senior mechanics with complex repairs and rebuilds under supervision.
  • May assist with District facility maintenance or construction-related tasks within the scope of training and assignment.
  • May be required to operate mosquito control ground adulticiding equipment during periods of heavy mosquito infestation, either in addition to or in place of regular duties.
  • Works collaboratively with other mechanics, equipment operators, and District staff to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Receives technical direction from senior mechanics or supervisors when assisting with complex repairs.
