About The Position

This position is responsible for advanced skilled craftwork that involves mechanical work. Duties include installation, maintenance, repair, and service of vehicles, equipment, and building systems and require advanced skills in a primary craft and may require limited competency in a secondary craft. Repairs malfunctions on all types of automotive and industrial equipment, including repairing and changing tires, repairing manual and automatic automotive transmissions, wheel alignments and balancing wheels, and installing and/or adjusting brakes, heaters, and defrosters. For repair purposes, use all types of testing equipment, including engine analyzers, electrical system testers, electric and gas welding equipment, hydraulic systems, and various hand and power tools used in automotive repair. Completes necessary paperwork to document all repairs and prevention maintenance tasks performed. Makes periodic inspections and does incidental repairs; disassembles and performs partial or complete overhaul of engines, transmissions, and differentials. Writes repair work order tickets and out-of-order tags preparatory to equipment repair; reports needed equipment and supplies to maintain proper amounts of inventory to perform jobs in a timely manner. Complies with emergency call-up procedures when conditions affect University operations, including driving and operating a University tow truck for service and emergency/breakdown calls and assisting with emergency snow removal operations. Schedules, executes and tracks preventative maintenance programs on all vehicles and equipment. Operates equipment to install, move, load, and unload materials. Also load and unload, equipment from vehicles and trailers. Operate heavy equipment (backhoe, skid steer, etc. in compliance with the operating safety policies and procedures. Heavy equipment operators must follow regulations and guidelines for construction work, such as using shoring when digging trenches. Clean equipment before and after use, and perform maintenance tasks. Keep maintenance records for each piece of equipment. Ensure equipment, materials, and the work site are maintained, kept clean, and stored safely. Assists with Grounds Maintenance, Irrigation, Recycling tasks, and other duties as assigned. This position is considered to be essential personnel and may require working overtime, which could include nights and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • Three years of related experience with some experience in a lead or supervisory role; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.
  • Knowledge of use of gasoline, diesel, and liquid propane gas fuel systems.
  • Physical ability to perform moderately heavy physical work which includes lifting and crawling, and to remain outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive a vehicle, and maintain coverage under University auto insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of one or more certifications or training programs related to mechanic work.
  • Experience working with small engines

  • Completes necessary paper work involved with equipment maintenance, purchasing parts, work orders, and monthly mileage.
  • Assists crews with ice and snow removal operations, preparing the campus for special events, grounds operations safety practices.
  • Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.
