Summary Repairs and overhauls automobiles, buses, trucks, and other automotive vehicles by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Tire changing, lube and oil changes, washing and cleaning cars, buses and trucks and act in helping with duties of Mechanic and Head Mechanic as required. Examines vehicle and discusses with Head Mechanic or Mechanic nature and extent of damage or malfunction. Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle. Removes unit such as engine, transmission, or differential. Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear. Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings. Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps. Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks. Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel. Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and solders leaks in radiator. Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts. Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers. Responds to requests for service and assistance. Follows policies and procedures. Uses time efficiently. Observes safety and security procedures. Reports potentially unsafe conditions. Uses equipment and materials properly. May be required to drive bus route.
