About The Position

Perform automotive and equipment corrective and preventative maintenance on District vehicles and equipment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the transportation department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, HiSET or GED
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL)
  • State of Iowa School Bus Operators permit
  • Practical working knowledge of routine automotive servicing
  • Working knowledge and skill in use of computer
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to promote spirit of cooperation with others
  • All candidates offered a position will be required to successfully pass a criminal background check, and a child and adult abuse registry check.
  • Certain positions may require fingerprinting, a drug and alcohol test, a physical capacity test and/or a motor vehicle record check.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of recent, relevant experience in an automotive service garage

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine automotive service maintenance as assigned.
  • Perform fluid level checks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform lubrication service on bus fleet and other equipment as assigned.
  • Perform preventative maintenance check of tie rods, springs, exhaust system, etc. and reports results to mechanics.
  • Maintain current record on all vehicles in relation to mileage and last date of service.
  • Assists mechanics in minor mechanical repairs and pick-up, delivery, or repositioning ofvehicles.
  • Change tires on buses and other vehicles as appropriate.
  • Assist in ensuring interior and exterior cleanliness and appearance of maintenance facility.
  • Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property, or failure of mechanical equipment.
  • Secure buses, building, parking lot, and fuel pumps at the end of the second shift.
  • Assist dispatch/routing by driving bus routes or trips as needed.
  • Utilize computer to read District and Department communications and take online training.
  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
