Mechanic Assistant (School Bus Fleet) Job Title: Mechanic Assistant Reports To: Shop Manager Location: 5575 Conner, Detroit, MI 48213 Job Type: Full Time, Monday-Friday Pay Range: $16-$20 an hour, based on experience Responsibilities/Duties: Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, and checking/filling all vital fluids. Help diagnose mechanical issues and assist in troubleshooting problems under the guidance of lead mechanic. Mechanical Support: Assist senior technicians with complex repairs on brake systems, suspensions, drivetrains, and engines. Safety Inspections: Conduct multi-point safety checks (PMIs) and help prepare vehicles for annual state or DOT inspections. Emergency Response: Assist with road calls and field repairs for disabled vehicles. Shop Maintenance: Maintain an organized, safe workspace and manage inventory of parts and tools. Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate and detailed vehicle maintenance and repair records. Qualifications & Requirements: Education: High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel repair is a plus. License: Valid driver’s license with a clean record; must be willing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements if required. Skills: Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand/power tools. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift at least 50 lbs., stand for long periods, and work in various weather conditions. Candidates must possess a personal toolbox with standard hand tools.
