About The Position

The Mechanic Assistant position at Barnard College involves providing semi-skilled work in a designated Trade Shop and performing routine and varied unskilled tasks in the service and trades. The role requires preparing the work area and dismantling it once the Trade mechanic designates that the scope of work is completed. The working hours are from Tuesday to Saturday, 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM, with Sundays and Mondays as regular days off.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED.
• Capable of using general hand and power tools.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a mechanical job.
• Ability to read and write English and follow oral and written instructions.
• Able to bend, stoop, push, pull, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to climb stairs and work in high altitudes from ladders, genie lifts, or scaffolds.

Responsibilities

• Assist all designated Trade Mechanics in performing various duties.
• Maintain the designated Trade Shop in a safe and functional manner.
• Conduct supply inventory for the designated Trade Shop, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and first aid supplies.
• Check equipment such as ladders and power tools, and update the maintenance logbook and/or work order system.
• Assist the designated Trade Mechanic in preparing for scheduled work assignments and accompany them to the work location.
• Erect and dismantle rigs, scaffolds, and ladders as needed to support trade mechanics.
• Clean and maintain surface areas of work locations, ensuring job sites are orderly and free of debris.
• Perform assigned work tasks in accordance with standard trade practices and ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and quality standards.
• Respond to facilities-related emergencies and work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Perform repairs in mechanical rooms or typical campus facilities as needed.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and organizational procedures.

Benefits

• $25.00/hr regular rate – $22.50/hr probationary rate.
• 180-day probationary period.
