About The Position

The City of Portales, New Mexico is seeking a Mechanic I for the Public Infrastructure Department. This is a non-exempt, safety-sensitive position that requires performing various routine duties related to the care, maintenance, and operation of city vehicles and equipment. The role involves maintaining logbooks, reporting malfunctions, and performing physical labor in various weather conditions. The Mechanic I will be responsible for light to heavy lifting and general maintenance of the City’s vehicles and facilities.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent desired.
• ASE certification preferred but not required.
• 5 years related experience preferred or any combination of training experiences.
• Ability to operate various manual and/or motor driven tools.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Show aptitude for safe operation of assigned automotive equipment.
• Must follow instructions, procedures and City safety rules and regulations.
• Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
• Previous work experience on diesel engines preferred.

Responsibilities

• Safe, efficient, and effective maintenance of city vehicles, small engines, and equipment.
• Perform routine cleaning of facility as directed.
• Washing and cleaning vehicle, equipment, tools, and parts.
• Running errands, purchasing parts, etc.
• Weld and fabricate.
• Work on and with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• Work on or with the maintenance software that the City may acquire.
• Maintenance on Freon / EPA 609 MVAC systems.
• On-call responsibilities for after-hours duties.
