The Hot Section Module Center (HSMC-S) is seeking a Material Control Lab (MCL) Metallurgical Engineer to support turbine airfoil operations in an exciting hybrid role. This position combines hands-on metallographic evaluation of blade and vane airfoils with the responsibility for MCL approval of engineering changes, including review of ESA PARs (Engineering Source Approval, Process Approval Requests), SA (Shop Assists), and material release. The role requires interpreting blueprints and specifications, ensuring accurate quality documentation, and collaborating closely with customers and cross-functional teams across the mod center. Additionally, this position offers the opportunity to support the adoption of a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), contributing to ongoing modernization and continuous improvement efforts within the lab.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Support with transition to new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • US Citizenship required due to government contracts

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of aerospace quality standards and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems and continuous improvement tools (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean).
  • Experience with Solumina G7 and SAP.
  • Proficiency with metallographic preparation (cut, mount, grind, & polish) hand tools, and test instrumentation (Nikon Microscopes).
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) with high attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Perform metallographic evaluation and documentation of processes including advanced/aluminide coatings, laser processing, EDM, brazing, and grinding on blade and vane airfoils for compliance to standards and blueprints.
  • Prepare samples and generate clear, concise laboratory reports.
  • Maintain records, and mounts in accordance to Pratt policies.
  • Monitor testing frequency and process compliance.
  • Review and approve ESA PARs, Operations Sheets (Solumina G7), and Shop Assists for MCL.
  • Collaborate effectively with customers at all levels (e.g. engineering, manufacturing, quality) on routine technical matters.
  • Develop cut-up and evaluation plans for tested parts.
  • Investigate parts and process related nonconformances and support root cause analysis.
  • Support with transition to new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
