About The Position

TerraPower is seeking a Deputy Discipline Manager to support the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) program. This position reports to the Nuclear Design Discipline Manager. This position centers on the oversight of nuclear design related technology development for MCFR commercial technology including the neutronics- and shielding design of the MCFR commercial plant, nuclear design methods development, nuclear data evaluation, and radiation transport model validation and evolving toward design and licensing of a demonstration MCFR reactor. You'll collaborate with the Nuclear Design Discipline Manager, project managers, project engineers, nuclear design engineers, in a high-performing, multi-disciplinary environment to develop the MCFR nuclear design technology to design and license a commercial MCFR power plant. This role is hybrid with on-site at least four days per week. The ability to be physically present at our Bellevue, WA headquarters is a requirement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience for level 12, or 10 years of relevant experience for level 13. Experience level may be partially substituted for advanced degree depending on position relevance.
  • Demonstrated experience with nuclear design of complex structures, multi-discipline integration, and nuclear sensitive equipment (nuclear reactors, reactivity control systems, critical assemblies, subcritical assemblies, radiation shields and / or nuclear instrumentation), including procurement support
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and the capability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks, ensuring project deadlines and objectives are met
  • Experience in radiation transport analysis using industry software - MCNP6.2, OpenMC, ARMI, and/or ATTILA desired
  • Experience with software quality assurance
  • Experience with nuclear design model validation and verification
  • Working knowledge of nuclear standards such as: ANSI/ANS 19.1, ANSI/ANS 19.3, ANSI/ANS 19.3.4, ANSI/ANS 8.1, ANSI/ANS 8.24
  • Organized and detail oriented, with excellent technical writing, presentation, and communication skills
  • Experience with common collaboration software - Atlassian Confluence and JIRA desired
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in radiation transport analysis using industry software - MCNP6.2, OpenMC, ARMI, and/or ATTILA desired
  • Experience with common collaboration software - Atlassian Confluence and JIRA desired

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for MCFR Nuclear Design
  • Inform the MCFR Nuclear Design Manager of activities within Nuclear Design discipline
  • Approve technical documents when delegated by the MCFR Nuclear Design Manager
  • Provide oversight of technical tasks within discipline areas or responsibility
  • Lead discipline group meetings when needed
  • Assign tasks to individuals within Nuclear Design to support project objectives
  • Interface with project stakeholders to ensure tasks are prioritized appropriately and promote communication across the discipline
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and use of discipline guidelines (e.g., design criteria, design guides, desktop instructions, design notes).
  • Assist with the engineering staffing plan, hiring process, and onboarding within the discipline
  • Provide management guidance, mentorship, training, 1:1s and Company performance reviews for individuals within MCFR Nuclear Design as required
  • Coach less experienced engineers and dedicate time and efforts toward growing talents
  • Ensure technical capabilities (training) and professional development of individuals within MCFR Nuclear Design align with project needs as required
  • Recognize the need and recommend obtaining external subject matter experts
  • Approve weekly timecard submissions for individuals within MCFR Nuclear Design as required
