Job Role SummaryThe Maternal Child Health (MCH) Department has seven dynamic programs/projects that are designed to reduce infant, child and maternal mortality within Marion County by providing essential resources that directly address the social determinants of health that contribute to the mortality rates of mothers, infants, and children. These programs/projects together within the MCH Department provide strategic services to improve family health and outcomes in our community. The MCH Department of the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) is looking for a creative intern to assist the Maternal Child Health Director plan and implement special projects to aid in the strategic implementation of the following projects and programs, Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Indianapolis Healthy Start (IHS), Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR), Healthy Baby Consortium, Beds and Britches, Etc. (BABE), Nutrition Services and Diaper Den. The intern will have the opportunity to observe and aid in the operations of all seven strategic programs within the MCH Department as opportunities arise. Essential DutiesIntern Job Responsibilities:The main role of this intern is to support the Maternal Child Health Director at the Marion County Public Health Department plan and implement special projects within the seven programs and projects by attending community events to recruit clients in need of services, educate community members on services provided within the seven programs and projects, conduct and assist in hosting events in which community members are invited, assist program/ projects managers and supervisors with delegated operational assignments.  This position may include survey analysis and writing and/or reviewing reports as well as involve public-facing events as the opportunities arise. Associated Job Duties•    In addition to job responsibilities, the intern will have the ability to shadow other areas within the health department

Requirements

  • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility to respond to changing situations/priorities.
  • Work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Have a general understanding of the social determinants of health
  • Participate as a multi-disciplinary team member.
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student seeking a degree in public health, social services, nutrition, and any health related degree that focuses on the varying components of the social determinants of health.
  • English writing and reading proficiency
  • Computer skills, Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
