About The Position

The Materials Handler is responsible for overseeing daily shipping and receiving functions in support of OMRFs biomedical research and administrative operations. This position serves as the primary point of contact for all shipping and receiving activities and ensures the accurate, compliant, and timely handling of research materials, laboratory supplies, equipment, and general deliveries. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to customer service in a fast-paced research environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in shipping/receiving, warehouse, or dock operations preferred.
  • Basic computer proficiency for tracking shipments and maintaining records.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, particularly time-sensitive research deliveries.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and customer service excellence.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, which may include moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds and tasks requiring standing, bending, and mobility throughout the shift, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all shipping and receiving inquiries from internal departments, Principal Investigators (PIs), vendors, and carriers.
  • Receive, inspect, and verify incoming shipments against packing slips and purchase orders.
  • Prioritize and distribute time-sensitive, perishable, and temperature-controlled research materials.
  • Handle specialty shipments including dry ice, refrigerated, frozen, and regulated materials in accordance with institutional and safety guidelines.
  • Assist with shipment of research materials in compliance with DOT, IATA, and other applicable regulations (training provided as required).
  • Load and unload delivery vehicles using pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records of all shipping and receiving transactions.
  • Monitor dock traffic flow and coordinate vendor and carrier scheduling to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety of the dock and storage areas.
  • Support recycling and waste management coordination as assigned.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to research and administrative staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
