About The Position

The Materials Handler position is a temporary role within the Forest Service, primarily located at a National Interagency Support Cache (NISC) or a Forest Service unit. The incumbent is responsible for a variety of warehousing and materials handling activities, including receiving, storing, repairing, refurbishing, and shipping supplies and equipment. The role also involves packaging and configuring items into kits, ensuring accurate inventory management, and maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license.
• Ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.
• Knowledge of materials and safety practices.
• Ability to interpret instructions and specifications.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with automated inventory systems.
• Familiarity with warehousing and materials handling procedures.

Responsibilities

• Loads and unloads supplies and equipment using manual and/or automated stock moving equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
• Utilizes an automated inventory database to locate and identify inventory.
• Checks, assembles, and processes documents, routing materials and equipment to correct locations.
• Verifies or prepares documents manually or using automated equipment for shipping and receiving.
• Ensures accuracy of inventory records and prepares reports on inventory status.
• Completes documentation for transportation, ensuring compliance with rules and regulations.
• Performs repair and refurbishment on National Fire Equipment System (NFES) inventory.
• Assists in developing plans for storage space and organization of stock.
• Packs and repacks a variety of items for shipment or storage, considering special requirements.
• Inspects inventory and identifies supplies for repair, refurbishment, or disposal.
