Lockheed Martin (MFC) is seeking a Materials Engineering Intern to support the Orlando, FL site. The engineer will be working in the Applied Research optical-materials lab. The internship offers a hands‑on, immersive experience in a research environment where cutting‑edge optical‑device technologies are developed for aerospace and defense applications. The intern will work side‑by‑side with senior scientists and engineers, assisting with the micro‑ and nano‑scale fabrication of optical components. In addition to fabrication work, the role involves extensive material‑characterization activities that span optical, structural, and mechanical domains. Typical tasks include measuring transmission and reflection spectra, performing Raman spectroscopy characterization, conducting scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy‑dispersive X‑ray spectroscopy (EDS) for morphology and compositional analysis, and evaluating scattering behavior of the fabricated components. Where needed, the intern will also participate in mechanical or environmental testing. Data gathered from these experiments will be meticulously recorded, processed, and visualized using tools such as MATLAB, Python, or excel, and the results will be communicated through clear technical reports and internal presentations. The intern will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot fabrication challenges, refine test procedures, and ensure that all work adheres to Lockheed Martin’s rigorous safety and data‑integrity standards. This experience provides valuable exposure to the full product‑development lifecycle, from material selection and prototype fabrication to performance validation and documentation.
