About The Position

The Materials Engineering Intern will support the metallurgical and materials-focused activities that enable repair, manufacturing, and new product introduction for aerospace and industrial gas turbine components. The intern will assist in materials characterization, metallurgical evaluations, coating assessments, process development, and continuous improvement projects. This role provides hands-on exposure to high‑temperature alloys, coatings, and real-world aerospace materials challenges.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in materials science, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering with a materials concentration
  • Curiosity about high‑temperature alloys, coating systems, and gas turbine component behavior
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a cross-functional engineering and operations team
  • Good analytical abilities and willingness to learn lab techniques and metallurgical tools
  • Effective communication skills and enthusiasm for hands-on problem solving
  • Currently pursuing a BS/MS degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering (materials focus), or related discipline
  • Rising sophomore, junior, or senior preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist with metallurgical evaluations of turbine airfoils, combustors, and structural components
  • Support labs with sample preparation, microscopy, hardness testing, coating thickness measurements, and diffusion analysis
  • Participate in evaluating high‑temperature alloys (superalloys, stainless steels, titanium alloys, etc.) used in gas turbine applications
  • Assist in coating process assessments, such as aluminides, thermal barrier coatings, and bond coatings
  • Help investigate production or field-return issues through root-cause failure analysis
