About The Position

The position at Blue Origin involves working as part of a diverse team focused on Materials & Processes related to Metallic Additive Manufacturing (AM) for spaceflight systems. The role is critical in developing, qualifying, and providing sustained manufacturing support for additively manufactured spaceflight hardware, with a strong emphasis on safety and collaboration. The successful candidate will lead test campaigns, optimize AM processes, and work closely with various engineering teams to ensure the successful implementation of requirements throughout the AM development phases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in materials, chemical, mechanical engineering or other relevant field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in materials and processes related to AM.
  • Proven experience as a principal investigator in process development and optimization of metallic AM processes.
  • Hands-on experience with measuring, analyzing, developing, and characterizing Additive Manufacturing of nickel, aluminum, and copper alloys.
  • Experience managing technology development projects and budgets.
  • Experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components or materials.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with powder metallurgy.
  • Hands-on skills with SEM, EDS, EBSD, IGF, pycnometer, PSD measurements, XRF, ICP, and OES.
  • Experience running room temperature, cryogenic, and elevated temperature mechanical testing.
  • Failure and Forensic Analysis experience.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and preparation of design allowables.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, qualify, and provide sustained manufacturing support for additively manufactured spaceflight hardware.
  • Lead test campaigns to develop mechanical and physical/thermal properties for materials manufactured internally.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to implement requirements in all phases of AM development.
  • Optimize and process harden AM processes to increase throughput and decrease variability.
  • Manage technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and budgets.
  • Develop and execute test plans for analysis and qualification of components or materials.
  • Analyze data and report results concisely.
