About The Position

The Materials and Cultural Assistant will be essential to carrying out the work of Aqqaluk Trust’s partnerships in organizing and making available Iñupiaq language tools and content for our language learners to access. The Materials and Cultural Assistant will be responsible for working with our partners and team to organize, identify, and create Iñupiaq language learning and other materials for the Trust’s cultural programs. The Materials and Cultural Assistant will also have the opportunity to help document Iñupiaq language knowledge around cultural activities throughout the NANA region. Documentation will be primarily video but will also include photo and audio. The Materials and Cultural Assistant will also support the logistical needs of various Aqqaluk Trust projects, outreach events, and regional language gatherings. This position is currently funded for 2.5 years.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Have basic knowledge of Iñupiat Iḷitqusiat and Iñupiaq cultural wisdom
  • Have knowledge of basic Iñupiaq language, willingness to learn the Iñupiaq language
  • Able to demonstrate responsibility, and motivation to learn and help others
  • Be an energetic self-starter with a desire to advance in learning and career goals
  • Works well with a team and follows through to complete assigned tasks
  • Must be able to operate in a climate of confidentiality requiring discretion
  • Be willing to travel to and assist in events
  • Competence in office skills, including file management and Microsoft Office
  • Loving, caring, supportive attitude toward Iñupiaq language learners
  • Passion for learning Iñupiaq and advancing language revitalization

Responsibilities

  • Work with Iñuuniałiqput and Uqapiaqta teams to create language-and-culture content
  • Organize files, documents, and materials at partner organizations
  • Identify materials that are near publication or ready to access by language learners
  • Organize and catalog recordings and translations from Iñupiaq speakers
  • Assist in planning logistical details of documentation sessions with Iñupiaq speakers
  • Support logistical needs of 2 regional language gatherings
  • Plan and support outreach events
  • Work alongside members of our team on various tasks and activities to meet Aqqaluk Trust’s goals and objectives
  • Learn the many aspects of our Iñupiaq way of life such as language, family systems, subsistence, environment, culture, well-being, and spirituality, with the goal of incorporating the learning in the materials produced
  • Other duties as assigned
