Job Title: Material Scientist Reporting To: Supervisor Sr., Matl Science Work Schedule: Onsite – Blacksburg, VA Material Scientist Moog Inc Blacksburg, VA Moog Space and Defense Group is the operating group with the longest heritage at Moog. You will report to the Materials Science and Engineering Manager and will have an onsite work schedule in Blacksburg, VA. To be considered for the Material Scientist role you will need: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, or materials science and 5 years of related experience. Hands-on experience with materials analysis techniques (e.g., FTIR, SEM) and statistical methods (e.g., SPC, Six Sigma Methods). Experience in failure analysis of electro-mechanical components is highly desirable. As a Material Scientist you will, Provide technical assistance and support in materials and processes, including development, selection, optimization, and troubleshooting. Scope: You will act independently to solve problems, requiring creativity and hands-on approaches. Work involves both routine tasks and innovative projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, or materials science and 5 years of related experience.
  • Hands-on experience with materials analysis techniques (e.g., FTIR, SEM) and statistical methods (e.g., SPC, Six Sigma Methods).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in failure analysis of electro-mechanical components is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Expertise in sliding electrical contact technology and tribology.
  • Material and process selection.
  • Assessing incoming materials and fabricated contacts.
  • Developing/improving inspection techniques.
  • Optimizing materials and processes.
  • Troubleshooting and failure analysis, identifying root causes, and validating corrective actions.
  • Provide technical guidance on materials and processes.
  • Assist production departments with troubleshooting and process instructions.
  • Conduct failure and post-test analyses.
  • Develop new materials and processing techniques.
  • Perform laboratory tests and data analysis.
  • Interpret and present analysis results.
  • Write materials and process specifications.
  • Stay updated on state-of-the-art technology in materials and processes.
