About The Position

Material/Process Inspector III Performs complex material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. Material/Process Inspector IV Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Trains others and may serve as a Lead Worker. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Expert skill in: Performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry and geometry Calibrating equipment Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
  • Proficient skill in: Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Extensive knowledge of: Materials design, specifications and applications Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures Laboratory testing procedures and methodologies Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques Nuclear gauge operation Soil types
  • Proficient skill in: Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations.
  • Plans, coordinates, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of technical employees.
