Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field (or equivalent work experience);
  • 2+ years of experience in logistics and material handling systems;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Proficient in understanding and executing verbal and written instructions, reading blueprints and/or technical specifications, and flow maps;
  • Experience working with ERP systems (PSI, Oracle) and understanding of inventory management and material control in warehousing/shipping;
  • Proficiency with Excel and Minitab;
  • Ability to perform in-depth statistical analysis, simulations, modeling, and effective forecasting techniques for logistics applications; and
  • Effective communication and collaboration with hourly teams, engineering staff, maintenance, and leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.
  • Experience integrating automation or advanced material handling technologies in industrial settings.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and optimize material flows with a focus on scrap, secondary, and finished steel products with consideration of rail, truck, and barge transport activities;
  • Design improvements for heavy material handling systems (inclusive of overhead cranes, forklifts, conveyors, rail and truck interfaces);
  • Lead and implement Continuous Improvement initiatives to eliminate waste, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance process reliability;
  • Develop and maintain shipping area layout designs with consideration to flow paths, storage zones, staging areas, and safety clearances;
  • Support time studies, work measurements, and capacity analyses to justify equipment changes, labor standards, and process redesigns;
  • Support implementation of ERP (PSI) and software management systems to ensure real-time tracking and traceability of steel products;
  • Collaborate with production, quality, maintenance, inventory, and planning/scheduling teams to align material handling operations with mill operations and minimize downtime;
  • Support new equipment or automation implementations with a focus on ROI and uptime;
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, OSHA regulations, and internal standards in all material handling redesigns; and
  • Lead or support root cause analyses of process failures or inefficiencies related to material handling operations.
