About The Position

The Pilot Plant Technician will work in the Tape Process Development Center (TPDC) within the Chemical Manufacturing Operations organization at 3M. TPDC focuses on developing prototype quantities of new materials and improving processes to support new and/or enhanced products for various 3M divisions. This role involves collaborating with innovative 3Mers globally, primarily working Monday-Friday with a weekly shift rotation, and includes periodic overtime, including weekends, to meet customer demands.

Requirements

High school diploma/GED or higher (completed and verified prior to start)
Three (3) years of combined laboratory/pilot plant/manufacturing experience in a private, public, government, or military environment
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Nice To Haves

Possess expertise equivalent to that which would be obtain in an associates/technical degree or higher
Experience in systems for the reporting of data in laboratory settings
Experience with the Microsoft 365 software platform, (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams)
Minimum of four (4) years of experience with quality or analytical testing and data reporting, hot melt compounding/extrusion, solution coating, microreplication, and converting in a laboratory/pilot plant/manufacturing environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
Flexibility to work shifts outside of the normal schedule (days, afternoons, midnights and weekends) for special projects as needed
Willingness to work in an environment where a wide range of chemicals are handled (This is a chemicals environment job)

Responsibilities

Maintaining a safe work environment for self, coworkers, and visitors including the ability to wear personal protective equipment.
Testing and dispositioning manufactured products as well as raw materials using a variety of analytical techniques.
Communicate results with other technical personnel and make recommendations as appropriate.
Help R&D teams by carrying out and evaluating new test methods
Reporting quality data and collaborating with diverse teams onsite to act on the data.
Preparing and operating development equipment which can vary with process and/or product experimental or standard needs. Includes setup, general maintenance, clean-up, and changeover of equipment.
Actively engaging with process engineers and customers to conduct product and process experiments.
Assisting and training new personnel on test equipment, machine operations and processes.
Assuring availability of raw materials by utilizing accurate production reporting and inventory practices.
Having the ability to lift pails, move drums, and drive PIVs.
Fostering a team environment and taking lead when necessary.
Comply with corporate policies, procedures and security standards while performing assigned duties.
Contribute to a strong Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) culture by following safety policies, identifying hazards, and engaging in continuous improvement.
