About The Position

Working with the Transportation Supervisor and the Director of Maintenance and Transportation, the mechanic maintains District vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations. The position is for 52 weeks and may require split shift hours. Performance will be evaluated by the Director of Maintenance and Transportation. The role is supervised by the Director of Maintenance and Transportation and the Transportation Supervisor, and exercises no supervisory responsibilities except when assigned by the Director of Maintenance and Transportation.

Requirements

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger, “S”, and Air Brake endorsements.
  • Must be able to pass a School Bus Drivers Physical Examination, per Federal and State Department of Transportation laws, including substance abuse screening.
  • Must be able to pass the State of Arizona Physical Performance Test for School Bus Drivers.
  • Must be able to pass a Fingerprint and background clearance.
  • Must have an excellent attendance record.
  • Mechanical experience necessary in diesel and gasoline engines and hydraulic and air brake systems
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to exert 30 - 50 lbs. of force frequently.
  • Must be able to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work around large equipment and in a noisy environment.
  • This position requires significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and dexterity
  • Must work in a safe and responsible manner.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Certification preferred.
  • Experience in vehicle air conditioning systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide all aspects of mechanical diagnosis and repair services for all District vehicles and power equipment.
  • Utilize district software for processing inspection and repair orders, routine maintenance and inventory management.
  • Perform repairs in the field when required.
  • Fabricate parts as needed for necessary repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to prevent equipment downtime and provide a safe environment.
  • Inspect, prepare and make available all requisitioned vehicles. Perform follow-up inspections on new vehicles to limit the District’s out of warranty expenses.
  • Understand DPS annual inspection and certification requirements.
  • Maintain and establish vendor relationships for all supplies required in the acquisition and maintenance of District vehicles and equipment.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, students, parents and vendors.
  • Have a positive, customer-service attitude.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Safeguard all tools, parts, and supplies and to keep workplace clean and organized.
  • Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed.
  • Operate all vehicles in a safe, efficient manner and transport only authorized students and personnel.
  • Prepare departmental reports as requested.
  • Assist Transportation Supervisor as needed with accidents, vehicle damage, and student injury situations.
  • Practice safe work habits. Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures, wear prescribed safety apparel. Ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Transportation Supervisor.
