The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public The Mass Wildlife Fisheries Intern will work closely with biologists and technicians in the field on various fisheries projects across the state. Interns will learn a variety of fishery survey techniques, fish handling, fish identification and general knowledge of Massachusetts freshwater fisheries. Intern would need to be able to provide their own transportation to and from MassWildlife Field Headquarter in Westborough. Intern would also have to provide their own waders for use in fieldwork. This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Interns may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.

Responsibilities

  • fish community surveys mainly in streams and rivers using backpack, raft, and/or boat electrofishing
  • fish handling, measuring, and weighing
  • field data collection, record keeping, and data entry
