GENERAL PURPOSE: Provides outpatient psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families within the Family Therapy Services component of services. Assess, treat, and support individuals and families, and to serve as a family and network liaison and coordinator with referral sources, community resources, and professionals both within and outside the Medical Center. Provides teaching and role modeling to students and other learners within assigned department.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or closely related field and major course work in marriage and family theory and practice required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Sound working knowledge of models of family therapy, knowledge about and ability to implement evidence-informed psychotherapeutic interventions required
  • Commitment to and routine demonstration of biopsychosocial approach to care of individuals and families required
  • NYS licensure as Marriage and Family Therapist upon hire required
  • OR if licensure has not been obtained upon employment, an active limited permit or submitted application to the NYS Department of Education upon hire required and NYS licensure as Marriage and Family Therapist within 36 months required

Responsibilities

  • Conducts assessment and intake interviews of patients and their families and designs appropriate therapeutic treatment plans with clearly defined therapeutic goals consistent with all regulations and guidelines established by the New York State Office of Mental Health and the Department of Psychiatry, Mental Health and Wellness. Conducts individual, family, couple, and systems-oriented therapy within the accepted standards of practice as delineated by OMH and the Department, receiving clinical supervision by senior staff. Engages in multidisciplinary teams and collaboration where appropriate. Refers to specialty and/or other appropriate services for evaluation and treatment as indicated and collaborates on shared patients where appropriate.
  • Completes and maintains patient charts, audio-visual forms, releases of information, case summaries, etc. Communicates with referral sources at time of referral, at initial interview, during the course of therapy and at termination by telephone and/or correspondence and/or personal appointment.
  • Establishes and regularly maintains cooperative working relationships with community and health agencies and staff of the University.
  • Attends clinic staff and trainee meetings. Attends new staff orientation as required by the Department of Psychiatry, the University of Rochester Medical Center, and the Family Therapy Services.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of, and follows, all Family Therapy Services and Psychiatry Mental Health and Wellness Services policies and procedures, as well as those delineated by the Office of Mental Health. Maintains professional standards and continuing education by reading, attending seminars, workshops and conferences, and staying up to date for the New York State requirements for maintenance of licensure as appropriate.
  • Participates in departmental and programmatic diversity presentations, as well as other ongoing educational opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
