About The Position

Are you excited by applying advanced modeling and analysis techniques to enable the next generation of maritime operations and undersea warfare systems? Do you thrive in environments where operational context, data-driven insight, and creative technical approaches merge to solve critical national challenges? Are you motivated to support US Navy missions by developing deep understanding of complex threats and sea control systems? If so, we want you to join our collaborative, multidisciplinary KTQ Group at APL. As a Maritime Operations Modeling & Analysis Engineer you will… Perform modeling, simulation, and operations analysis for maritime and undersea warfare systems, supporting threat assessment and operational decision-making. Analyze various operations data to characterize adversary and US platform behaviors, assess vulnerabilities, and inform platform/system effectiveness. Develop, implement, and enhance analytic and simulation tools using techniques like statistical modeling, AI/ML, Monte Carlo, Kalman/Bayesian filtering, and optimization. Shape and execute rigorous analysis plans, interpret results, and develop recommendations to improve threat detection, classification, or defensive resilience. Interface with sponsors and partner organizations, delivering technical results through reports, visualizations, and presentations for both technical and decision-maker audiences. Collaborate across disciplines, integrating with systems engineers, cognitive science specialists, operational experts, and developers. Contribute to the development and deployment of platforms and sensors, including concept of operations, requirements analysis, testing, and field experimentation.

Requirements

  • Possess a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Operations Research, Data Science, or a closely related technical field.
  • Have 2+ years of relevant experience (which may include internships, research assistantships, or equivalent) in modeling, simulation, or operational systems analysis in the maritime/Dept of War domain area.
  • Are proficient in MATLAB, Python, or similar for modeling, simulation, and data analysis, and working knowledge of other programming languages (C++, Fortran, R and/or Java).
  • Demonstrate strong proficiency with statistical and computational techniques such as Monte Carlo simulation, model-based estimation, Kalman and/or Bayesian filtering, machine learning, or platform/sensor modeling.
  • Excel at analytical problem-solving, learning new technical topics, and communicating complex ideas with clarity.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Have direct experience in maritime or undersea warfare domains, Navy operations, threat analysis, sensor/platform evaluation, or human-systems engineering.
  • Hold 5+ years of applicable technical experience (in DoD, research, engineering, or analysis roles).
  • Are experienced with advanced simulation tools (AFSIM, discrete/event-driven simulation, acoustic/non-acoustic modeling, search theory).
  • Are proficient with collaborative software development (version control, Git), rigorous documentation/presentations, or cross-team technical communication.
  • Have experience in project leadership, task management, sponsor engagement, or in mentoring/teaching.
  • Hold an active Top Secret clearance.
