About The Position

The Sr. Specialist - Marine Operations position reports directly to the Marine Manager. Individuals in this role will collaborate closely with the terminal operations group to ensure the efficient execution of daily Marine Assurance tasks within the terminal. In addition, the role will provide support for various aspects of our business, including terminal inspections, marine scheduling, incident investigations, and act as a liaison between the vessel and the terminal to ensure safe and efficient operations of vessels that call the terminal.

Requirements

  • At least eight (8) years of experience working in a port or shipboard environment in a position that involves direct participation in relevant technical/engineering and marine shipping management activities.
  • Minimum marine license 3rd Mate Oceans, Master of Towing Near Coastal or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years sailing on a CG license and participation in standing a navigation watch is required.
  • Experience with cargo transfers on petroleum vessels is required. Experience with liquefied gas ships is preferred.
  • Marine Engineers may also apply, provided they possess a background in petroleum transportation while sailing on their license.
  • Candidate must be able to communicate with key internal stakeholders in Terminal Operations, Engineering, and Commercial personnel. External stakeholders would include USCG, Pilots, vessel personnel and owners, and local port consortiums.
  • Must possess strong decision-making ability.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the CFR’s, IMO standards and Industry Best Practices as they relate to the marine industry for facilities and shipping.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in conducting audits, investigations, vessel inspection, Safety Management Systems, and Vetting.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal abilities. Capable of effectively communicating at all levels of an organization as well as individuals and groups from various disciplines, industries, and governmental agencies.
  • Demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic IT skills for communications, graphics, measurement, research, and reporting.
  • Ability to independently establish work priorities that are in line with overall department and facility goals.
  • Ability to climb around vessels and confined spaces for inspections.
  • Ability to pull lines, swim, don emergency equipment, opening large heavy hatches, or potentially jump from heights.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license for the state of residence.
  • Must have and maintain or have the ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a Maritime Academy is preferred but not required if experience is commensurate to the time and exposure to the marine industry.
  • Pipeline and/or process facility operation experience is desirable.
  • Experience with inland petroleum barge operations is highly desirable
  • A basic understanding of the aspects related to the transportation, transfer, storage, and processing of NGL’s (or other fully refrigerated hydrocarbon liquids).

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe and efficient cargo transfer operations and intercede whenever there is an unsafe act.
  • Liaison between all vessels and terminal operations.
  • Provide marine expertise as needed by the terminal operational or commercial personnel.
  • Monitor the scheduling and vetting processes to ensure smooth arrivals and transfer operations.
  • Act as a representative for marine issues in the port.
  • To have an eye toward security issues when related to the vessel at the berth.
  • Develop a relationship with the owners of time-chartered vessels or vessels with frequent arrivals.
